Best Way to Merge and Split EPUBs

EPUB is widely used by eBook distributors such as Google Play Books, Kobo, and Apple Books, which makes EPUB one of the most popular formats for ebooks. Most important, EPUB can be an open format and is based on HTML, as opposed to Amazon's proprietary format for Kindle readers.  

When we need to combine and join multiple EPUB ebooks into one EPUB ebook or split off part of an EPUB into a new book to make it easier for you to share or read them, you can follow this guide to merge and split epubs with ease.

As far as we are concerned, using calibre EpubMerge and EpubSplit plugin is by far the most efficient, stable, effortless method to help you merge and split EPUBs. Let’s check it out. 

1. How to merge multiple EPUB files

EpubMerge plugin allows you to create new EPUBs by combining the contents of existing non-DRM EPUB format eBooks. It combines all pages in the ebooks you have selected one by one to create a large ebook. 

Step 1, download the latest version of EpubMerge plugin zip and install the plugin.

Launch calibre, then go to Preferences (in calibre toolbar) > Plugins > Load plugin from file. After the plugin EpubMerge successfully installed, you need to restart calibre for the plugin to take effect. The newly added EpubMerge plugin will appear on the toolbar.

Step 2, merge multiple EPUBs into one in a new book. 

First, select at least 2 epubs in your calibre library and click the EpubMerge icon in calibre toolbar.

Second, rearrange the order of the file combinations.

Tips: EpubMerge plugin provides you the ability to rearrange the order of the file combinations by clicking the button on the right side of the popup window. 

You can move selected books up or down the list. Then click OK and the book for the new merged epub will start creating in the background. 

However, the epub will not be created until you’ve reviewed, edited, and closed the metadata dialog window. 

Lastly, the merged epub will appear in the library when it’s done. 

2. How to split EPUB into smaller parts

Step 1, download the latest version of EpubSplit plugin zip and install the plugin.

Launch calibre, then go to Preferences (in calibre toolbar) > Plugins > Load plugin from file. After the plugin successfully installed, restart calibre for the plugin to take effect.

Step 2, split off part of an EPUB into a new book.

First, right-click on the epub file you want to split and select the EpubSplit icon on the toolbar.

Second, highlight the sections you want to split and click New Book(make one new book containing the sections selected above).

The new book has been created and it will show up on the main interface of calibre.
