How to Upload EPUB/PDF/Kindle to Google Play Books

Google Play Books app is an excellent alternative to the Kindle app. As a free ebook reader app coming from Google, it gives you access to a large bookstore with a collection of millions of books and also lets you upload your epub/pdf books from other sources to create your own library. Besides, you can easily sync the bookmarks and notes to Google Drive or share them with others for collaboration. Better still, you can sync ebooks across mobile and computer once you upload them to the cloud. In this post, I will guide you on how to upload ebooks to Google Play Books step by step.

Before we start, there are a few points we need to know:

  • Google Play Books only supports DRM-free EPUB and PDF files. Kindle books (KFX, AZW, AZW3, Mobi) and any other DRM-protected files (e.g. Kobo/Nook ebooks) cannot be uploaded. For such files, you can use Epubor Ultimate to help you remove the eBook DRM and convert them to EPUB or PDF.

  • Books can be added to Google Books either from the computer or Android app. You cannot add ebooks from an iPhone or iPad. But don't worry, the books uploaded from the computer or Android app will sync automatically across devices so you can also read them on iPhone or iPad.

  • Here this guide only introduces the steps of adding ebooks to Google Play Books from the computer as it's much easier than from an Android device.

How to Upload Kindle Books to Google Play Books?

As Google Play Books only supports ePub & PDF format, we need to convert Kindle books (KFX, AZW, AZW3, Mobi format) to ePub/PDF at first. You can read the following article to learn how to convert Kindle books to DRM-free ePub/PDF format.

Detailed Guide: The Easiest Ways to Convert Kindle AZW to PDF

After you convert Kindle books to ePub/PDF, we can read the next part to upload the converted Kindle books to Google Play Books.

How to Upload EPUB/PDF to Google Play Books?

Step 1. Visit Google Play Books in a browser from your computer and sign in with your Google account.

Step 2. Click "My Books" at the left-side bar.

Step 3. In the upper-right corner, click on the "Upload files" button.

Step 4. A window will pop up asking you to select files. You can add ePub/PDF ebook files from your local device or from your Google Drive.

Step 5. Wait for the file uploading to be completed. You will see a "Processing" word for the book.

When the file has been uploaded to Google Play Books successfully, the "Processing" word will disappear. And you can see the book in the library. You can also click the book cover to rightly open that book on your browser to start reading. These books are also accessible on your other devices in your Google account. The reading position would sync across devices. Now just enjoy reading!

Processing Failed?

—"I have some ePub files that I want to upload to Google Play Books. I have successfully done that to other books. But for some unknown reason, I can't upload these titles. I have tried many times. Google Pay Book just gives back to the message 'Processing failed'."

This is very often when we try to upload some files to Google Play Books. There is no exact reason or solution to this problem. But according to some users' experience, converting your ePub to Mobi and then convert Mobi back to a new ePub file seems to solve certain types of tricky issues with some epub files. Remember to upload the newly created ePub file, instead of the original one. Epubor Ultimate can also help you do such a job.
